Learn The A-Z On Social Media Security

October is Cyber Security Awareness month. Cyber Security Awareness is an initiative that seeks to ensure that all who engage in online activities are made aware of risks that are prevalent and that they are well –informed to take measures that will prevent them from experiencing any harm. There are many facets to Cyber Security; however this article will purport to delve into one of its most popular subset, Social Media Security as it is recognized to affect virtually everyone.

Social media is loosely defined as websites and applications that enable individuals to create share and/or participate in social networking. With every social media account you sign up for, every picture you post and status you update, you are sharing information about yourself with these social media companies and the world. Now more than ever, consumers spend increasing amounts of time on the Internet. What do you need to know to protect yourself whilst using social media accounts?

Regardless of the choice of social media platform you use, it is of paramount importance that consideration of the type of information chosen to be shared with others is done. In addition, wearable and always-connected devices, combined with aging password culture, has created a new market for fraudsters — one that benefits from user assumptions of inherent privacy and protection.

When you are actively engaging on a social media account, you are exposed to the following risks;

  • Sharing sensitive information. Social Media has a way of making you feel comfortable to share even some of their most personal information. Caution should be exercised when you are tempted to share this kind of information. In one click alone information is divulged to all manner of persons.
  • Posting questionable content. It always seems right at the moment to say what you feel like because as it is commonly said, You Only Lives Once right? Wrong. These posts or videos that you post may in the future haunt you in unimaginable ways. You may think that you deleted them anyway so you are safe, but who else saw the post or video and has it in their possession and what plans they have for you. Best principle to apply, prevention is better than cure.
  • Tracking your location. Many social media platforms allow you to check in and broadcast your location, or automatically add your location to photos and posts. Think long and hard before you commit yourself to exposing your whereabouts to thousands and thousands of people. Would you want everyone to know where you are all the time? If your answer is no, then that option of sharing your location should be a no-brainer.

All that said and done, prudence dictates that it is advisable to connect only with people you trust. It is repeatedly being announced that the internet is slowly making the word a global village. That in essence does not compel you to accept requests from individuals who you know nothing about.

Speak up if you’re uncomfortable. If a friend posts something about you that makes you uncomfortable or you think is inappropriate, let him or her know. Likewise, stay open minded if a friend approaches you because something you’ve posted makes him or her uncomfortable.

This October stay secure, guard yourself.
